Before the hens move in

How much space do chickens need?

These plans give each standard hen about 4 sq ft inside the coop and 10 sq ft in the run, one nest box for every 4 hens, and 8 to 10 in of roost bar each.

Raised coop or walk-in?

Up to 8 hens the plan is a raised coop on legs with the run underneath and beside it, so you clean it from outside. From 10 hens it becomes a walk-in coop you can stand up in, with a separate walk-in run.

What keeps predators out?

Half-inch hardware cloth on every side of the run and on top, a 12 in apron buried around the edge, and two-step latches. Chicken wire keeps chickens in; it does not keep raccoons out.

How much ventilation?

About 1 sq ft of screened vent for every 10 sq ft of floor, high up under the roof where it does not blow on roosting birds.
